Background Info:
Sierra Blanca, Texas (population of 557) is a mundane town tucked underneath White Mountain, just North of the Mexican Border. It’s an hour southeast of the bustle of El Paso in an area so remote, tumbleweeds outnumber people a thousand to one. The town’s only claim to fame was arresting Willie Nelson for marijuana possession in 2010. This only made the Rubedec Murders that much more harrowing. If you haven’t ever heard of these cases before, Rubedec is short for Rube Goldberg Decapitations.
The first victim was Lorena Sallas. She was a 24-year-old single waitress who lived alone. At 2:00 AM on March 14, 2007, an assailant broke into her home, drugged her, and rendered her unconscious for 14 hours. She was woken up by the sound of instructions from a detuned voice over her stereo system, stating “If you move, you will die. You have lived a useless existence of excess but in death, you will finally serve a purpose.”
She looked down to see that she was tied to a chair in her basement. A plate balanced on her head, with a piece of string tied to it. Right in front of her was a laptop livestreaming the whole chain of events. After doing her best to stay still for the longest 20 minutes of her life, she momentarily lowered her head, causing the plate to fall off and initiate a Rube Goldberg chain reaction. There was a sequence involving pinballs falling down mini slides to dominoes cascading across the room. Finally, a series of books fell onto scissors which cut a rope, releasing a 10-foot ax from the ceiling that decapitated Lorena in one fell swoop.
The Rubedec Killer recorded these sessions binaurally so anyone listening back could hear these grisly mechanicians as if they were in the room. This killer replicated this event with similar devices on two other victims the following month, Carlos Aniceto (24) and Ana Nuñez (23). The Rubedec Serial Killer never struck again and the case went cold. The common assumption is that these were cartel retaliations in a turf war. The victims deserve real answers.
